Among strangers and friends alike, Kay often
gets the same response to her do-it-yourself
home decor, “You did what? That’s incredible!”
Kay has a special talent of visualizing the possibilities for unique
decor that fits the user. Her goal on every project is to create a
user-friendly decor that is pure eye candy. This usually involves
projects that are her own creations such as creating a lamp out of
anything or changing a piece of furniture to fit your look and
function. She will rescue parts of furniture or architectural items
about to be discarded and use them as an accent in a room or
reassemble them into something that they never were meant to be
such as a mirror frame from an old table. Kay’s favorite pastime is
searching for home decor ideas by prowling around home im-provement
stores, reading Handyman and Decorating Magazines,
and frequenting garage sales. Her forte is taking what she finds in
her search and applying it in ways that it was never intended to be
used. Kay’s projects have been published in Arts and Crafts
Magazine and by Dow.
After ten years of having a retail store in Eau Claire, Wisconsin,
where she created dried floral arrangements and decorated
homes and businesses, Kay has decided to offer her ideas to
everyone via books and speaking. Her first book in her All
Through the Home series is All Through the Home - Bathrooms
released in September, 2003. All Through the Home - Kitchens
will follow closely in spring, 2004. In addition to her books, Kay
conducts workshops on do-it-yourself home decor topics such as
Create a Lamp Out of Anything, Faux Finishing Techniques, Small
Furniture Renewal, and Brown Paper Bag Wall Papering. She
wants to help women learn to use tools such as the miter box and
the drill comfortably, just as she does. Since learning to handle
tools or getting home decor ideas is a visual process, Kay plans to
put her ideas into a television vignette series based on her book
series.
